Solar Nations: Building the Global Transition to Renewable Energy

Objectives
The Solar Nations Coalition will operate as an internationally chartered non-governmental organization. The Solar Nations team will:

  • Develop regional and national systems models of energy options and environmental impacts as foundations for policy formulation,

  • Design policy for adoption at local, national and international levels,

  • Incubate innovation centers for renewable energy and energy conservation (universities, civic activities, NGOs, business start-ups, etc.),

  • Develop renewable energy and energy efficiency projects, including policies adopted through student initiatives, employing industrial capacities fostered within the innovation centers,

  • Recruit teams of international exchange students at Universities in Member Nations to engage productively in community service projects.

The Transition from Fossil Fuels to Renewables
The key recommendation of the IEA Alternative Policy Scenario is a transition to energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies to replace fossil fuel-based electric power generation which accounts for 90% of targeted carbon emissions reduction....

Membership
The Solar Nations Coalition is inviting nations to join and substantiate their commitment to the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. A meeting of Charter Members is scheduled to adopt a joint declaration and launch a bold international initiative.

Programs in the Galapagos

The Solar Nations framework emerged from a project in the Galapagos Islands that operates under the Clean Development Mechanism of the Kyoto Protocol. As a consequence of a Human Capacity Building project which began there in 2002, a Solar Nations project has been established as GalapagoSolar, an energy conservation and solar energy development program on San Cristóbal Island.
